This potato salad is served how Suzy remembers in the true hertiage way of the Germans from Russia who settled in North Dakota in areas like Strasburg or across the river in Morton County. The secrets behind Grandma’s special recipe:

Boil potatoes in the jackets, Suzy prefers the yellow potatoes, North Dakota Reds will work too

Peel the potatoes while warm

Use two kinds of onions, white and green

Pour the vinegar oil mixture over the warm potatoes.

Grandma's Secret German from Russia Potato Salad Recipe, Authentic and Yummy!

Holiday gatherings and potlucks make me think back to times as a child. The things Grandma would prepare to celebrate the occasion. This recipe is adapted from the many recipes Grandmas have written down but have not revealed the secrets to get the dish to taste like they use to make. Many prefer the creamy mustard type potato salad. Suzy prefers the cold German potato salad like her son's grandma use to make the old way, the German from Russia style, the Strasburg North Dakota style.

This recipe just like Grandma did, is perfect to share at family gatherings, holidays like the 4th of July, potlucks or as a side with grilled hamburgers or brats.

Cook Time 20 minutes
Additional Time 2 hours
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 pounds of yellow potatoes
  • 6 chopped green onions
  • 1 small white onion chopped

Mix together in a bowl

  • 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (Grandmas like Mazola corn oil but vegetable oil works too)
  • 4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Put unpeeled potatoes in salted water in a large pot to boil,
  2. While potatoes are cooking chop onions put aside in a bowl
  3. Mix the vinegar, water,sugar, oil, salt and peper, set aside
  4. When a fork easily inserts into potato, firm but not mushypotatoes they are done
  5. Rinse potatoes
  6. While potatoes are still warm peel them with a knife or your fingers, under cool running water if too hot to handle
  7. Slice potates and place in a large bowl, Grandmas like a big tupperware bowl that has a lid
  8. Toss onions in with the potatoes
  9. Pour oil over the warm potatoes, stir carefully till coated
  10. Refridgerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, the longer it sets in fridge the bolder the flavor
  11. Enjoy!
