In the midwest many will call a sloppy joe a BBQ. While down south a BBQ is not a ground meat Sloppy Joe. Some areas may call them a Slush Burger. What ever you call them; they are great for potlucks, backyard or campground gatherings. We have served them at fundraisers, at graduation and birthday celebrations. They are a crowd favorite. In this Episode of the Sisters of the Spoon. Suzy makes her recipe a new fangled way, as Sharon rolls her eyes. Sharon uses a more traditional approach to her preparation and her recipe.
Suzy's New Fangled Sloppy Joes
Ingredients
- 1.25 pound pkg of ground turkey
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 a onion chopped
- 1/2 a red pepper chopped
- 1 can no salt diced tomatoes pulse in blender or food processor
- 1 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon each of black pepper and salt
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar (It is okay to substitute light brown sugar and 1 teaspoon molasses or skip the molasses)
- Dash of Frank's Red Hot Sauce
- 2 tablespoons of quick cooking oats
- your favorite grated cheese to top each Joe with
- Brownberry whole wheat hamburger buns
- Pickles
- Butter for the buns
Instructions
- In large skillet heat oil add red pepper and onions.
- Add the ground turkey and brown
- Add tomatoes, seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, brown sugar, oats.
- Simmer till desired consistency about 10 minutes to 15 minutes.
- Butter buns and grill in a frying pan or on a griddle.
- Spoon Sloppy Joe mixture onto each bun, top with cheese
- Serve with pickles

Sharon's Sloppy Joes Recipe
A more traditional recipe
Ingredients
- 2 pound of 85/15 Ground Beef
- 1 1/2 cup chopped red pepper
- 1/2 cup onion chopped
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup brown sugar (a handful)
- 3 swirls of prepared mustard (swirl around the frying pan)
- 1 can tomato soup
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 1/4 tsp horseradish
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- 8 White Hamburger Buns
Instructions
- Sauté onions and red peppers with some salt
- Brown Hamburger Drain
- Add the rest of the ingredients
- Simmer about 20 minutes
- Cut the buns using Sharon’s trick not cutting all the way through making a pocket for the filling.
- Fill the buns with mixture
- Serve
