Thirty two miles of sugar white sand and turquoise colored water beaches stretch across the gulf of Mexico in Alabama. Here are some of the fun things to try in the Gulf Shores area. Suzy did these and loves everything about Alabama Beaches!
On the Beach
Sandcastle University
Learn how to make a sandcastle with Janel from Sandcastle University. Janel and her team are great teachers. Suzy even asked if she had been trained in the education field because she is so patient and thorough in teaching the best tips and tricks of sandcastle crafting. Learning to sculpt with sand is so much fun. She came to the beach to set everything up and we just showed up, had fun! Sand Castle University sets up from Johnson Beach to Fort Morgan beach area, the complete stretch! It is an activity where you must get down and get into the sand. With this in mind, if ya gotta bad back or you have difficulty walking on the sand it might not be for you. Suzy is so excited to show her grandsons the skills she learned.
Enjoy a gourmet picnic on the beach!

Lauria’s Italian Bar & Bistro provided beautiful charcuterie trays, delicious humus, bread, and pita chips. It was a feast.
Surprisingly not one sea gull joined in on our feast. This is an all-time favorite experience Suzy enjoyed while staying at The Lodge in the Gulf State Park.
Watch the Sunset
The first two sunset photos were taken at the Lodge at Gulf Park. After taking the photo of the couple, Suzy approached them, upon turning around, Suzy saw that she was expecting. They loved the photos, expecting twins in April. The photo on the right is taken from the patio of the High Tide Daiquiris & Mimosas.
The sunsets are so beautiful over the gulf to watch from the beach, from the many water front restaurants, The Perch, the Foodcraft, the Roasted Oak, the Hangout, the Gulf, High Tide Daiquiris and Mimosas, or Cobalt
Waterfront Dining
High Tide Daiquiris & Mimosas
Located at 807 Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores, Alabama. This is a great place to watch the sunset. Enjoy a flight of daiquiris and/or mimosas. They were all yummy, but Suzy’s favorite was the bush whacker and the key lime. They have breakfast, charcuterie, and other food items on their menu. If the water conditions are right, not too much wind or current, you can take a giant swan or flamingo pedal boat out for a little cruise. They also have swings to sit on. This local family-owned business is a fun place to stop. The turn off comes quick, Suzy shot passed it. You can see it across from the Oyster house.
The Foodcraft
Located at the Lodge at the Gulf State Park 21196 E Beach Blvd Gulf Shores Alabama. Has beautiful seating indoors and on the patio for a vista view of the gulf. Serving a breakfast buffet with made to order omelets, plenty of crispy bacon, fresh fruits and other breakfast favorites. They also have a pasta buffet on Wednesday nights during snowbird/winter resident season.
The Roasted Oak
Located at the Lodge at the Gulf State Park 21196 E Beach Blvd Gulf Shores Alabama Grab a coffee or a drink, they serve different beverages such as beer, wine and margaritas too. They also serve some pastries and donuts.
The Hangout
The Hangout is located at 101 E Beach Blvd with a fabulous gulf view in Gulf Shores Alabama. This is a family friendly restaurant with eclectic decor, pez dispensers lined up on a wall, colorful rubber duckies making a wave up and around an old vintage looking beach picture. Shark attack drinks where the shark spills blood (grenadine) into your blue colored drink. Gotta try the lifeguard burger if you dare and if you can open wide to take a bite. Blow the whistle if you feel the need to be rescued. Every year they host a live music festival.
The Gulf
Is a local seafood restaurant at 27500 Perdido Beach Blvd Gulf Shores Florida. The lobster rolls were the favored choice of the group dining. Suzy had the crab boil which included mussels, shrimp, snow crab, potatoes, and an Alabama sausage called Conecuh. It tastes almost like a spicy beef snack stick but softer.
Lulu’s
Located at 200 E 25th Ave Gulf Shores Alabama has water view seating. This is Jimmy Buffett’s crazy sista’s restaurant serving up specialty drinks with a rum drink in a bucket. Yes a bucket of booze! Crazy! The tuna dip is excellent and highly recommended as a starter. Oh, my goodness the cheesy Chicken Jerk Sandwich looked so yummy. Suzy had a huge pulled pork sandwich. Loved the barbeque sauce, just the right of tang and spice for her and not too sweet. They have fun photo opportunities, a great little gift shop and areas to play.
Cobalt
Cobalt the Restaurant is located at 28099 Perdido Beach Blvd in Orange Beach with a water view near the Caribe Marina. Beautiful indoor and outdoor patio dining. Seafood is their specialty, but they offer delicious pizza and other menu items. The bushwhacker is a must try. Yummy!
On the Water
Float in a dreamy hammock while sipping on your favorite beverage while Jimmy Buffett tunes plays in the background with Captain Glen (in photo below on left) at the helm guiding you to a perfect island to disembark or to a favorite local hangout like the Flora Bama to get a Bushwhacker. Hammock Time Tiki Tours even has a potty on board for a leaky on the tiki.
Dive into Artistic Wonders
Orange beach World-class Art Center, the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach is the place to let your creative juices flow. The Hot Shop is where you can watch artisans shaping glass into a beautiful flower or starfish or whatever they choose. It is FREE to watch. If you want to join in the creative fun for ages 8 and up, make your reservation for an available time slot on their website. The class is about 95 minutes long. Your creation sets up for 24 hours in something called a annealer. You pick it up the next day or they can ship it out to your home address.
Suzy made a flower choosing her favorite beachy colors. The other women in the class chose their favorite colors. Not one turned out the same, this is original art. At first a little anxiety crept in because that glass is HOT! Dan and Athan, are fantastic craftsman and instructors, putting us at ease. Guiding us nervous Nellies with patience and safety. Poor Athan we joked his name was missing an N for Nathan, being a good sport, he went with the flow.
Other classes and camps are also offered at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach.
